THE VILLAGE Kpemale is a small village of 1,000 inhabitants, which has had electricity since 2016 and where water is drawn from the surrounding wells. Agriculture is at the heart of the local economy. Maize, the staple of the local diet, is grown here, along with root vegetables (yam, cocoyam), tomatoes and onions. Mango trees provide fruit in season and shade all year round. The main language spoken is Bimoba. Dwellings are mainly built of sun-dried rammed earth with roofs made from plant branches. Animals live alongside humans both inside and outside their homes. Cooking takes place in the courtyard, using charcoal or wood-burning stoves.
